How High Can You Fly?

Ξ September 27th, 2007 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Boardgames |

That’s the name of the boardgame contest for a Premium Edition of a popular boardgame called Caylus.

It’s the ultimate geek contest, requiring participants to work out the highest number of points a player can score in a 2-player game, assuming that his opponents collaborates with him.

Now this is easier said than done since the game itself have 18 turns, with 6 actions per turn available. The permutations of 18X6 actions are endless and the next idea always seem better than the last one.

After 4 late nights and lots of brain cracking later, I finally settle on a particular strategy and began working out the problem in earnest. My strategy requires the incorporation of many ideas discussed with friends as well as those posted on the internet.

My final approach is a combination of the alexfrog-jack208 castle rush method with my own ayheng victory point optimisation conjecture along with the traditional prestige building finishing. Some minor optimisation work was done as well to maximise the opponent’s actions to give the first player more points.

The record for 1-player Caylus was 370 points and I calculated 409 points for 2-player. Am going to check my work with the help of rhyen and jack208. hopefully it’ll be enough to win me the game!

Rest in Peace, Robert Jordan.

“The Wheel of Time turns and ages come and pass. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow. Let the Dragon ride again on the winds of time…” - Robert Jordan, from the Wheel of Time series.

Although his masterpiece lies unfinished, his works will continue to bring fantasy and imagination to all. Rest in peace, Robert Jordan.

Wedding Update

Ξ September 10th, 2007 | → 2 Comments | ∇ Uncategorized |

B’cuz fiancee Li Li said that I’m a shy guy, I’m continuing to post here on my wedding updates.

Mom and dad met up with future parents-in-law to discuss on wedding details. Everything is as Li Li and I planned except that a pig and dowry got mentioned somewhere… (what is this, an Indian wedding?) ah well… things could be worse. Hope that they’ll still try to keep things simple (although I overheard them discussing customs with a relative… shudder!)

Sg. Sedim Rafting Trip

Right, this trip almost didn’t happen for me because dad’s factory was doing a shifting at the same time. Thank goodness everything went smoothly and I’m able to made it. (An apology goes out to my primary school mates as making this trip meant that I couldn’t attend the reunion.)

So, Sg. Sedim @ Kulim white water rafting, how does it compare to Sg. Kampar @ Gopeng and Sg. Selangor @ Kuala Kubu Bharu?

river.jpg

Overall, I feel that the rafting experience is less than fulfilling because the raft kept getting stuck on rocks. This was probably due to the river level being on the low side that day and also due to the less experienced handling by the guide. For the first time, I appreciate the good banter and instructions given by the guides on the Kampar and Selangor River. A good guide will keep the rafters entertained, give expectations on the challenges ahead and is experienced enough to free a stuck raft quickly. Unfortunately we didn’t get good guides here at Sedim.

On the plus side, Sedim has a few special characteristics which warrants a visit despite its shortcomings.

1st off, there’s the special tubing session before the main event where one solos through some small rapids, including one that they called the “RODEO”… a washing machine extravaganza designed to spin you topsy turvy.

2ndly, there’s the ‘water confidence’ training which have you jumping from an approximately one storey high rocky outcrop into the river below.

3rdly, a grand climax awaits your unsuspecting group when the guides sit all of you inside the raft without any oars, then push you off a sheer cliff/rapid, plunging a good distance to the cold waters below!

Hehe, fun fun fun, now only if they’ll give their guides more training….

Other highlights of the trip:

A. Comfy accommodation, with personal locker, clean attached toilets,

sedim7.jpgsedim2.jpgsedim3.jpg

proper bunks, and esteemed fellow guests such as “Group Tak ingat Nama” and “Mat Rempit Perlis”

B. A trill-a-minute turn on the Flying Fox… Now everyone can fly!

adhere to safety procedures, get into gear, await your turn

ff12.jpgff5.jpg sedim4.jpg

climbing up, up, up the tower, and we have lift off!

C. Canopy Walk in the Park

a little misdirectioning, before finding oneself standing on a grill, 26m (approx. 10 storey) above ground!

canopy5.jpgcanopy8.jpgcanopy.jpg

of course, we came to see the trees, especially this number which gave the area the name. (Kulim tree)

D. A detour on the second day to Penang, land of food. We stayed at a posh place with unlimited internet.

penang.jpgpenang1.jpgpenang2.jpg

…but we spend most of our time eating and watching TeeVee…

tv.jpg

So sad to report that boardgaming was limited to 2 games of That’s Life, a few sessions of Coloretto and 2 tries of Incan Gold. Blame it on the TV and the fact that Ivan did not bring Bang! for gaming during Sedim.

bubbles.jpg bubbles: and i was left at home!!! arrggghhh!!! i’ll be back!!!

ff7.jpg tune in to our next trip as we try to get confirmation on sightings of brokeback action…
