Klang Gaming Session Sat 14 Jul 07 Part I

Last week was a long weekend for penangites due to the Penang Gabenor’s birthday on Monday. To celebrate this glorious event as well as fellow Penangites’ return to Klang, it was decided to have - the Klang Super Formula One Ultimate Race (TM)!

Pre-race preparations saw the team drivers having breakfast at the famed Teluk Pulai Bah Kut Teh Restaurant. Team Ivan, Vincent, June and Aik Yong started eating first while Team Alvin joined shortly after rushing down from TTDI because he woke up late (the lazy pig…) . Team Jun Hao later also joined but did not partake of the feast as he was having a cough. Early casualties were Team Larry, who did not turn up (the FFK bugger…) , and Team Hooi Teng, who again overslept (big surprise, SUPER LAZY bugger…).

Having thus satisfied themselves with a delicious meal and filled themselves with enough energy for the race ahead, the teams adjourned to the Klang Boardgame Circuit (my house lar…) for the race.

First order of the day: a brief introduction to the rules of Formula De.

The track chosen for this session was the Monaco track. This is largely a technical track, with lots of slow corners. One needs to carefully plan the gear the car uses to exit corners to ensure that he is not left in the dust. After rolling for pole position, which happens to be won by Team Alvin, the racers are off!
00:00 All cars started normally except for Team Vincent, who seemed to be suffering from a stalled engine (a.k.a. bad dice roll…) .
00:30 All cars entered the 1st corner in their respective position except for Team Vincent who drops to last place due to his mis-start.

02:00 Coming out of the 3rd corner, Team Alvin (white car, green tail) made a key roll to take the lead and entered the 4th corner in perfect timing. Team JH (red car, yellow tail) and Team AY (yellow body, blue tail) are left one step behind in 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Further back, Team June (white car, red tail) edged out Team Ivan (green car, blue tail) for 4th while Team Vincent (blue car, white tail) is still in last place.

02:30 Entering the deadly 3 stop corner, the racers slow down to a crawl. Team Alvin is already planning his exit route while Team Ivan, June and AY jostles for 2nd.

Already halfway around the circuit and the cars look deceptively close. However, Team Alvin is actually one step ahead and he exits…

03:30 …the corner at high speed to leave the competition behind in the long straight.

05:00 Catching the race leader seems like an impossible task, so the rest are left to fight for second place. Seen here are Team June and Team JH neck to neck oh, and what is this? Seems like Team Ivan has crashed out (overturned car). Team AY takes some damage from the debris, but still manages to keep himself on the road.

05:15 Gambling on a high gear, Team AY overtakes and goes right behind race leader Team Alvin! Team JH’s luck runs out as his mis-timed car crashed into Team June, disabling himself and left Team June’s car in a bad shape.
06:00 Despite a late challenge, Team Alvin hang on for the win followed by Team AY, June and Vincent. Team Vincent incredibly did not finish last, thanks to Team Ivan and Team JH crashing out.

Final Standings:
1st - Team ‘I-hate-dice-game’ Alvin
2nd - Team ‘just-miss-a-bit’ AY
3rd - Team ‘haha-stoopid-guy-drivers’ June
4th - Team ’shit-lost-to-gf’ Vincent
Did Not Finish (DNF) - Team Ivan, Team JH

Thoughts on the race: The turning point of the race came at corner#4, as Team Alvin was able to get to it one step ahead of the rest. This built him up to an unbeatable lead for the rest of the race.
Thoughts on the game: This game feels like there is less downtime than the previous game. Perhaps a combination of factors like having less cars and having someone to prod everybody along to make their moves contributed to the faster game. There are not many choices to be made in this game as compared to another game of similiar length like Puerto Rico. The only choices are in choosing the gear and dice to use. Overall impression is mixed but then again, everyone have their laughter and fun.

… to be continued …
