Games played afternoon with Teng Hock:

Pic15382_sized Lost Valley of the Dinosaurs - Haven’t played this game for a long time. Still fun though. By the end of the game, both of us had 3 of our explorers KO’ed and each of us had just one explorer left in swamp area, lost. Dinosaurs were guarding all exits and there was no way to escape. So, we had to call it quits with both of us tie.

Games played at night with Alvin and Teng Hock: (Hooi Teng couldn’t make it so three of us start off our gaming session at 1am)

Pic87047 Target Arnhem, Across 6 Bridges - A free game I got off from MultiMan Publishing http://www.multimanpublishing.com (Just paid for postage). Took awhile to setup and explain the rules to Teng Hock. It’s quite an interesting game with interesting mechanics. We just had our first turn when Alvin arrived and so we had to put away this 2 player game for future play. But in just playing one turn, I can see that I basically bungled the first turn in that I did not take Arnhem and I allowed Teng Hock to move in his armor units to fortify the city. It means I just lost the game because the game makes it extremely disadvantageous for armies to attack cities. Oh well, will take note for next game.

Pic9176 Puerto Rico - A close 3 player game. Alvin got off his building strategy but overcompensated for his money. As a result, his rhythm was off and he did not get to mayor his two large buildings. The two large buldings would have given him the win.

On the other hand, Teng Hock sneak off with a victory with his shipping tactics. While I was building up my shipping too late, Teng Hock got most of his shipping points and could diversify later into a bulding strategy. I finally lost to Teng Hock by 4 points. At one point, I went for the wharf instead of the factory and it net me just 4 points from the extra shipping. If I had gone for the factory, I might have gotten more money and potentially a large building to compete. As it is, I was one step too late.

Pic87874_1Carcassonne - Again, Alvin went for a non-typical strategy and overcommitted to the strategy of controlling the farmlands too early (farmer strategy). He was left with no spare meeples by the middle of the game to capitalise on his subsequent tile draws and I subtly started laying castle tiles away from his farmlands. Teng Hock developed a balanced strategy and once again beat us both. I got lucky late in the game and got to finish a few castles, but was not enough to rack up the points to beat Teng Hock. Duh, Teng Hock, you must have been secretly practicing behind our backs! :P

Railroad Tycoon - We decided that the night is still young and brought out a heavier game. Now in this game Teng Hock finally got stuck on his strategies and end up being last. And it seems that a similiar lack of experience put Alvin’s sabotaging strategies into disarray. I scored some early bonus points from the starting objectives and led all the way. My scoreline was very flattering half way through the game and both players conceded, vowing revenge next time after this learning experience.

Pic6096 Hotels - As Teng Hock was complaining of too much strategy in the last game, we brought out our last game which uses dice and brainless luck. This time, Alvin turned on his mad ‘dice-chucking’ skillz and he decimated both Teng Hock and I, leaving us battling to find out who would bankrupt first. I won the battle but finally still had to concede to Alvin’s superior hotel managing and dice chucking skillz.

Overall, a good game night, we knock off at 5am in the morning, and everyone went home having won some games. Will be looking forward to Cameron trip next when Teng hock brings his new purchases to try. See you guys there!

Just felt like sharing what a power boardgamer shelve looks like:

Now_this_is_what_i_call_a_games_collecti

Right. And I have 6 games, 994 more to go!

This particular collection is from Tom Vasel, one of the more prolific boardgame reviewers on the Internet. He has his own Podcast (Internet Radio Broadcasting) at www.thedicetower.com and he receives free new games from publishers to review all the time.

Man, what a guy, what a life.

Luckily I’m just happy if I get to play and enjoy time spent with my friends!
